Screen-Free Activities for Kids That Require Almost No Prep

Need 20 minutes to make dinner?

If you're a parent, you know the pressure to keep kids entertained, especially when the weather keeps everyone indoors. Sometimes all it takes is a little imagination and a few everyday items.

Here’s our list of simple screen-free activities that are easy to pull together and can help turn an ordinary afternoon into an opportunity for connection, and fun!

Screen-Free Indoor Activities For Kids (Zero Prep)

  • Build a Blanket Fort: A few blankets, pillows, and chairs are all you need to create an instant adventure zone. Kids can turn their fort into a reading nook, pretend campsite, castle, or secret clubhouse. The setup is part of the fun.
  • Play “Floor is Lava”: A daycare favorite for a reason, The Floor Is Lava is one of those simple games that never seems to get old. Use couch cushions, pillows, blankets, or pieces of paper as "safe zones" and challenge kids to move from one spot to another without touching the floor.
  • Create a Secret Handshake: Work together to invent a family handshake complete with claps, snaps, fist bumps, or silly moves. Kids love having something that's uniquely theirs, and it can become a fun tradition you'll use for years.
  • Play "What's on My Bum?": Need a low-energy activity? Popularized by parenting expert Dr. Becky, this simple game is often an instant hit. Lie down, close your eyes, and let your child carefully place household objects on your bum or back. Can you guess what they picked? It's simple, silly, and often keeps kids entertained longer than you'd expect.
  • The Yes Game: For five minutes, every question has to be answered with "yes." For example: "Are you a chicken?" "Yes." "Do chickens drive monster trucks?" "Yes." It gets ridiculous very quickly and kids love the absurdity.
  • Try a Sticker Story Challenge: Give your child a sheet of stickers and a blank piece of paper. Their mission? Create a story using the stickers as characters. This activity encourages creativity and storytelling with almost no setup required.
  • Have a Dance Party: Turn on some music and let everyone choose a song. Whether it's a two-minute dance break or a living room concert, dancing is an easy way to get everyone moving and shake off extra energy.
  • Set Up a Coloring Station: Sometimes the classics are classics for a reason. Put out crayons, markers, or colored pencils and let kids create freely. For an added challenge, ask them to draw their dream treehouse, a funny animal, or whatever they are interested in.
  • Shop Your Recycling Bin: No fancy craft supplies required. Gather a few clean boxes, cartons, tubes, and containers from your recycling bin and challenge kids to create something new. It could be a robot, a skatepark, or a vehicle for a stuffed animal!
  • Put on a Silly Fashion Show: Challenge kids to create an outfit using dress-up clothes, hats, scarves, or items from around the house. Bonus points for funny walks down the "runway."
  • Bring Back Halloween: No need for a special activity kit, just open up the costume bin. Kids of all ages love the chance to revisit old favorites and create new adventures. Bonus points for a family runway show or silly character voices!

When You’re Out Of Ideas, You’re Not Alone

Keeping kids entertained can sometimes feel like a lot, but you're definitely not alone. Every parent searches for one more idea to fill a rainy afternoon or burn off a little extra energy. Remember that it doesn't have to be perfect, and sometimes the simplest activities end up being the most memorable.

Enjoy the moments, embrace the mess, and know that parents everywhere are figuring it out right alongside you.
