5 Easy DIY Holiday Card Ideas For Kids to Make this Winter

Winter is the perfect time for children to unleash their creativity!

DIY holiday cards are not only a fun activity to keep kids engaged during downtime, but also a heartwarming way to share joy with friends and family. Here are five easy and festive seasonal cards kids can make with minimal supplies for maximum fun!

Make a Fingerprint Christmas Lights Card

Let kids turn their fingerprints into a colorful string of lights with this fun activity for children who are old enough to work with paint.

  • Materials: White card stock paper, washable paint (various colors), a black marker
  • How to Make: Start by drawing one to three squiggly lines across the card to mimic strings of holiday lights. Next, let kids dip their fingers into the paint and press them along the line to create colorful bulbs! Finally, connect the bulbs to the string of lights with black marker.

Create a Handprint Reindeer Card

Transform children's’ handprints into a cute reindeer with this card that older family members will love comparing their own prints with.

  • Materials: Brown and white card stock, googly eyes, a red pom-pom, glue, markers
  • How to Make: Allow kids to trace their hand on brown card stock, and cut it out using scissors. Glue the cutout onto the front of a card, and decorate the reindeer by gluing the eyes and a pom-pom nose! We love to even draw on antlers on the fingers.

Craft a Button Ornament Card

Give old buttons a new purpose with this colorful, 3D card idea that kids will love to plan and create on a cozy evening.

  • Materials: White card stock, assorted buttons, glue, ribbon, markers
  • How to Make: Encourage kids to choose their favorite buttons and glue them onto the card in clusters to mimic differently sized ornaments. Use markers to connect the buttons to the top of the card, and add ribbon bows for a 3D look!

Design a Cookie Cutter Stamp Card

Turn holiday cookie cutters (we love gingerbread, snowflake, candy cane, stocking, and present-shaped cutters!) into holiday stamps with this idea!

  • Materials: Colored card stock, holiday-themed cookie cutters, paint, markers
  • How to Make: Dip the edge of a cookie cutter into a little bit of paint, and press it onto card stock (kids can also trace around the cutter with markers). Encourage children to add extra designs inside each stamp, like polka dots and stripes!

Make a Festive Tissue Paper Tree Card

Let kids tear small pieces of green tissue paper and make this beautiful, textured, and tree-themed card.

  • Materials: White card stock, green tissue paper, glue, markers
  • How to Make: Tear the green tissue paper into smaller pieces. Next, let children glue the pieces on the card to form the shape of an evergreen tree. If desired, draw a star on top with markers and decorate the tissue paper tree with dots, sequins, or glitter.
