Why Reading the Ingredient List Matters

Scanning the Nutrition Facts panel will tell you how much of certain nutrients a product contains, but the ingredient list tells the story of what's actually inside. Learning to read ingredient lists can be empowering, and it’s one of the easiest ways to make informed choices without needing a degree in nutrition.

Nutrition Facts vs. Ingredient Lists: What's the Difference?

Most people assume these two sections provide the same information, but they serve different purposes. They work together to give a complete picture of a product.

The Nutrition Facts panel tells you the what by showing information like calories, total sugars, fiber, vitamins and minerals, and serving size. The ingredient list tells you what it's made of by showing the ingredients used, the order they're listed in, where sweetness and flavor come from, and whether natural or artificial ingredients are included.

How to Read an Ingredient List Step-by-Step

When you look beyond calories, sugar, and fiber, you find out important information like where the sweetness comes from, whether the ingredients are organic, how many ingredients are included, and how recognizable they are.

When reading ingredient lists, start here:

  1. Ingredients are Listed by Weight: Ingredients are listed in order of weight, with the ingredients used the most appearing first. If fruit juice or fruit purée is one of the first ingredients, it means it makes up a significant portion of the product.
  2. Look at the Source of Sweetness: Not all sweetness comes from the same source. Choosing products sweetened with fruit purée rather than refined sugar may be a more natural option for your family.
  3. Check for Artificial Flavors and Colors: Many parents choose to steer clear from artificial flavors and colors, and the ingredient list can help you quickly identify them.
  4. Look for Certifications: Trusted certifications like USDA Certified Organic, Canada Organic, Non-GMO, and Gluten-Free can help you identify products that align with your family’s preferences.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) encourages people to use the Nutrition Facts label to compare products, and choose options that align with your family’s nutritional needs and goals. [1]

What Ingredients Should Parents Think Twice About?

Products with ingredients like artificial flavors, artificial colors, high amounts of added sugars, or long lists of ingredients you don't recognize are ones many parents consider limiting or steering clear from.
